The BEST Way to Organize Seed Packets
Hello friends! I’m thrilled to share with you my new and much improved way to organize my garden seed packets.
Are you an organized gardener? You probably are. Well, this post may not help you then. If, however, you also have piles of half empty, crumpled, and generally disrespected seed packets lying around your house in random places then you may find this post helpful.
I mean, just look at all these seeds desperate for any kind of organization! Truthfully this doesn’t even look that bad, but this was after I tossed the worst packets and staged the rest so they looked somewhat presentable…
For years I’ve had no set system of keeping my seed packets organized, and as I am now a Very Serious and Determined Homesteader, it’s high time I implement a system that works.
In order to make this post, I first had to hunt for my stashes of seeds. I found some that I had squirreled away in an empty plant pot in the garage, some in a recipe box, some in an unpacked moving box, more in a kitchen drawer, and still others spilling their contents in my garden tool bag in our shop outdoors in the cold…needless to say, the old “storage method” was neither efficient, nor effective. While organizing my seeds, I even found some packets from 2016!
So, not only did I organize my seeds, I also did some quality control and tossed out anything too old.
Onto the best seed packet organization solution…
I found this photo storage case on Amazon that is highly reviewed and looked very promising. It has 16 individual 4″x 6″ cases inside, aka the perfect size for seed packets (especially those larger ones from Baker Creek). I ordered it and I am happy to report it is even better in person. Now I can have a briefcase of garden seeds, which is basically the only briefcase I’d ever use.
Here’s what the case looks like. I ordered some colorful ones, but they also have clear cases if you prefer.
Look at how well even the big seed packets fit!
I organized my seeds in a way that made sense to my brain, but obviously cater this towards your ideal organizational method. In each section I grouped seeds that “go” together. Carrots and onions, beets and radishes, salad blends, lettuces… you get the idea. You could even buy two cases and have one hold the cool season seeds and the other hold the warm season seeds. The seed storage opportunities are seemingly endless.
The case even came with labels. So now from any angle you can see which seeds are where! Organized and efficient. So excited to get growing. If you’re curious about what we are hoping to grow in 2022 here at the Halcyon Homestead, check out this post!
Let me know if you decide to try out this photo-case-turned-seed-packet-storage-container, or if you have another favorite way of storing and organizing your seeds!
