DIY Fabric Corner Bookmark

I love a fast and fun sewing project around here, especially if it results in something that is useful and cute, like this fabric corner bookmark.

I was browsing tutorials on the web for fast sewing projects on a particularly rainy Pacific Northwest day and came upon an idea for a corner bookmark from Homespun Seasonal Living, and I knew I had to give it a try. As with my easy-to-sew catnip toys post, this project is another fabric stash buster!

This project takes about 10 minutes and would make a fantastic gift. I made two, one for me and the other for Mr. Halcyon. We’ve been using them consistently for the last several weeks and love them.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Three 4″ x 4″ squares of fabric
  • Sewing machine and thread
  • Iron and ironing board
  • Rotary cutter and cutting mat

Let’s make it!

First, cut out your fabric squares. They can be all the same fabric or different, it’s up to you and your creativity. One square will be folded into a triangle, and that becomes the corner of the bookmark, so you will see it the most when you use it.

Three 4"x4" fabric squares

Fold one of the squares in half, creating a triangle, and press flat with an iron.

Place the triangle on top of another fabric square, with the folded edge of the triangle towards the center of the square.

Place the third fabric square on top of the other two, right sides together, and pin or clip.

Next, sew a 1/4″ seam around the perimeter, leaving a gap of about 2 1/2″ open on one side. Snip each corner to remove excess fabric and help the corners to be sharp when you turn the bookmark right side out.

Turn the bookmark right side out using the open gap. Use your finger to push out the corners.

Press flat with an iron.

Pressed fabric bookmark

Top stitch a 1/8″ seam all around the square, and give the bookmark another press if needed. And just like that, you have a lovely fabric bookmark that took very little time but is useful and enjoyable!

Hope you give this fun fabric bookmark a try!
